How do you choose a gray paint color?

I’d have to think gray is the go-to paint color when painting your home. Like many other neutral paint colors, It coordinates with everything and it’s the perfect paint color for any home decor style you have. Now one would say “sure, let’s paint the walls gray”

Ok, hold up Becky! It’s not that simple.

There are so many shades of gray to choose from. Warmer shades tend to have a more brown or yellow base, while cooler shades have more of a blue base.

How do you decide between a warmer gray or a cooler gray?

Look at the fixtures, cabinetry, floors, and the trim in the home. A brushed nickel faucet pairs well with a cooler gray, where as a red brick fireplace is complemented beautifully by a  warm gray.

A good rule of thumb is you want to have the undertone of your home interior elements match the undertone of the gray paint color you choose.

Knowing your undertone will help you in picking out the perfect gray shade.

The Best Sherwin Williams Gray Paint Colors

Below I have compiled a list of the best Sherwin Williams gray paint colors that I personally love and that are very highly requested by many clients.

Sherwin Williams Repose Gray 7015

Repose Gray is a warm gray. It has brown-taupe undertones. These undertones can be slightly unpredictable meaning you might see faint brown or purple depending where you apply this it.

This color is perfect because it is light enough to work in almost any space with any decor style. Repose Gray is one of the most popular Sherwin Williams gray paint colors and it’s also a regular on Fixer Upper. If it’s used by Joanna Gaines, you know it is good!

Sherwin Williams Mindful Gray 7016

Mindful gray is a warm gray. There are no strong undertones making it the perfect neutral. It is another great light color but a bit darker than Repose Gray. Mindful Gray is also a Sherwin Williams Gray that is often used color on Fixer Upper.

Sherwin Williams Dorian Gray 7017

Dorian Gray is a gray that’s a medium-toned color, with a slightly greige undertone. This paint colors warmth pairs well with medium to dark flooring and bright white trim.
I personally use SW Dorian Gray in my master bedroom. Dorian Gray can look dark in some lighting however in a larger room with a ton of natural lighting, this Sherwin Williams gray stands up well.

Sherwin Williams Dovetail 7018

Dovetail is a great charcoal gray with a hint of a blue undertone. It is a dark almost masculine color that makes your whites really pop. I used Dovetail for all the interior doors in my home. This Sherwin Williams gray is certainly darker than some of the other grays I have mentioned.

Sherwin Williams Gauntlet Gray

Sherwin Williams Gauntlet Gray 7019

Gauntlet Gray is a deep gray that has more brown-taupe undertones than black. Gauntlet gray works great as an exterior paint color and also works well for cabinetry, wainscot, and trim. With it being a darker gray, it’s a great color to use on an accent wall in a room with a lot of natural light. If you’re looking for a gray charcoal color Gauntlet gray could be the winner.

Sherwin Williams Requisite Gray 7023

Requisite Gray is a lovely medium tone Sherwin Williams grey paint color. It has a nice mix of warm and cool undertones, not too green and not too purple. This makes Requisite gray a phenomenal choice, working well in almost any home. This is a very sophisticated clean color.

Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray 7029

Agreeable gray has a brown/ slightly taupe undertone. The brown undertone keeps it on the warm side, not allowing it looks too cool. As the perfect greige, this color is an effortless neutral that brightens a space providing warmth and blending seamlessly with almost any color palette. Agreeable Gray is one of the most popular Sherwin Williams grays. A definite go-to neutral for many people and it’s another gray paint color I always suggest to customers.

If Agreeable Gray is a bit too cool for you, consider checking out the warmer Accessible Beige. Don’t be fooled by its name either, Accessible Beige has a little bit of gray in it and can be considered a greige.

Sherwin Williams Worldly Gray 7043

Worldly Gray is quite a soft color. It has brown and green undertones that give the paint color a subtle greige feel to it. Worldly Gray can look more like a greige or gray depending on what’s going on in your space, giving a room a soft look to it.

Sherwin Williams Useful Gray 7050

Useful Gray is a warm and sophisticated neutral color with beige undertones. This gray brings the perfect amount of warmth if you love gray, but are not fond of the coolness some gray paint colors can have. Pairing Useful Gray with an off white, and deep espresso brown will give you that classic and timeless pallet, working well with a number of decorating styles.

Sherwin Williams Analytical Gray 7051

Analytical Gray is mildly similar to Useful Gray but with a certain depth to it. Both colors are light and warm with beige standing out to be dominant. Analytical Gray is a fantastic neutral color, beige mixed with just the right amount of gray.

  3. I need a dark gray color for the base of my bar. I want to go dark because people’s feet band against it. I have anew gray (sw) in the block of the wainscoting outlined in white for the rest of the room. We also have a fireplace in there that is being refinished in stones (grays), a black mantel and black metal front. It’s a big room with a lot of light. The flooring is tile floor that looks like rustic wood (grays, browns, black). There will be a white French door by the bar and on the other side of the room is a large white bay window.
I was looking at Guantlet Gray (sw).

    1. Hey Kathy!
      Sounds like a beautiful room.
I personally love Gauntlet Gray and I think it would work great with the colors you have going on in the room. I also love DoveTail, it’s a shade lighter than Gauntlet but it’s beautiful. I have Dovetail on all the interior doors in my home.

  4. We,ve just painted our stucco home repose grey and we love it! we have a large metal stripe and shutters through the middle of the exterior that are bluish. Now we,ve considered Gauntlet grey , Dovetail grey all a bit too brownish so we may go to a bluish/grey but something sofy not too shocking! our home is south facing! Any suggestions? Thank you, love your site!!!

    1. Hi Ann!
Isn’t Repose Gray an amazing color? Look into Steely Gray SW 7664, it’s a mid-tone blue gray, very pretty. Or Foggy Day SW 6235, this one is a little darker and a touch more blue in it. one last one to check out would be Web Gray SW 7075. This one is the darkest of the 3 but has a great mix of blue and gray. I hope this helped! I’d love to know what you end up choosing, keep me posted!

  5. I have a bright turoquoise front door and getting ready to paint shutters. What suggestions can you give? I was thinking in the gray colors?

    1. Hey Judy,
I love a door that has a pop of color!
      What color is your home?
I like Light French gray. It’s a light neutral gray. Or If you wanted a darker gray, look at Dovetail or Gauntlet gray

  6. We are moving into our new home and the builder used Dover White for the interior including the Trim. I was going with Anew grey but after reading your article maybe Agreeable Grey is a better choice? We have a lot of natural light and our floors are a Toledo grey tile (light) Help!!!

    1. Hey Muriel,
First, I don’t think you can go wrong with either color, I love them both. That being said Anew Gray is a bit darker. The natural light will definitely help with making it feel lighter. In rooms with less natural light, the color will be more saturated, or darker. If this isn’t a concern, Anew Gray is a beautiful greige paint color. Now if you are worried about Anew being a bit too dark, Agreeable Gray is the way to go. It’s a light shade of greige than Anew Gray. I suggest swatching both Agreeable Gray and Anew gray (large swatches) near the trim and watching the colors throughout the day to see how the lighting affects them.
I hope this helped! Let me know what you choose!

  7. I have Useful Gray in the kitchen and it has a lot of light green tones depending on the time of day. The Analytical gray in the dining/living is a bit darker, but also has green. I don’t know if I love it, but it’s a very neutral color.

  8. We are painting our living room and dining room that connect. We have dark trim on the windows, base boards and door ways, with beige carpet. What color grey would go good. also we have a lot of windows in both rooms.

    1. Hey Mary!
I’d look at Agreeable Gray. It has warm undertones that will work with the (assuming) wood trim, baseboards ect. I’d also look at Modern Gray SW 7632. It’s similar to Agreeable Gray but with a little more beige in it.
      Hope that helps!

  9. After reading your article (so helpful, thank you!) I’m thinking of painting the exterior of our house Repose Gray. I was thinking of a dark charcoal for the door and chimney. Do you have any suggestions for a true charcoal that isn’t bluish? Thanks again!

    1. Hey Lori!! I’m so glad you found it helpful!
A great option for a charcoal color would be Wrought Iron or Kendall Charcoal from Benjamin Moore. Wrought Iron is a bit darker than Kendall Charcoal. You can also check out Peppercorn from Sherwin Williams. Hope that helps!!

  10. We painted our new home interior with Mindful Gray. We wanted a warm greige color. Unfortunately, we also have led recessed lights. The mindful gray is very much a blue green color. So disappointed. We have looked into replacing all the bulbs in the house, but would still have led undercabinet lights in the cool led bulbs. Our other choice is to repaint the entirety of the home interior. Either option is very expensive.

    1. Hey Sherri,
Unfortunately Mindful Gray will show its blur/green undertones in certain lighting, especially cooler light. Maybe you can consider bringing in decor items or fabrics that have a warmer feel to them. It can possibly help balance out the coolness of the wall.

  11. I’m doing naval on my kitchen cabinets. The kitchen opens to the living area with cathedral ceilings and a dining area. Both the dining and living area have floor to ceiling windows looking out to the East. My flooring will be a tile wood reflecting wood tones with a touch of grey. Can you suggest a paint color for walls and trim? There will also be a floor to ceiling light stone fireplace and Natural wood beams on the living room ceiling.

    1. Hey Holly!
I absolutely love Naval cabinets! The space sounds gorgeous. I’d look into Repose Gray. I like Repose because it’s not too warm or cool. You can also look into Alabaster. It’s a creamy off white-ish color. Agreeable Gray is a great option too. It is a tad bit warmer than Repose. Big Chill is another great Gray. this one is a bit cooler than the others though. For the Trim, look at Pure White or Extra White. I hope this helps!

  12. My kitchen/great room is painted Wool Skein. I have an adjoining dining room and adjoining family room (lots of windows in the family room). I was looking at Mindful Grey for the dining room (medium color hardwood and darker wood furniture, northeast facing room) and a slate blue for the family room. Is this too much?

    1. Hi Vickie,
I’m curious how Wool Skein comes off. Does it look beige/ tan? I know that it can sometimes have a slight green undertone. Wool Skein doesn’t work with some grays so It’s hard to say if the other colors will work without knowing How WS looks in your home first.

I do love how Mindful Gray complements wood tones though. Also, Northern facing rooms tend to bring out the cooler tones in a color. With Mindful Gray it has the potential of looking blue/green.

  13. I have a home where the exterior has red brick. I’m thinking about painting the exterior shutters Black Fox. I’m trying to find a light gray for trim. Any suggestions?

  14. Hi! We are trying to change our home colors from beige to the greys. Our kitchen has granite that has beige, some grey.. overall pretty neutral. The backsplash however is the old Tuscan look and leans more towards the beiges and is rather busy (I don’t like but the budget doesn’t allow it to be replaced). We have oak cabinets that were painted a very dark charcoal. We would like to bring in a fridge for the walls but can’t decide which one. We want it on the lighter side but dark enough to have some color. What would you recommend? Thanks so much!!

    1. Hey Danielle,
Since you still have tans and beiges going on. to complement them and bring everything together I’d go for more greige paint colors.
It’s hard to give you a specific color since I don’t know the exact colors in the space. I will suggest you look at a few of my favorite greige paint colors.
Sw Agreeable Gray, SW Anew Gray, SW Worldy Gray and SW Amazing Gray

  15. Hi Cate,
We just tiled our shower a dark grey with black and white tones in it. We have a grey vanity with Quartz too that has slight black and grey swirls. Our floor is a dark wood with some grey and tan in it. Would like the walls grey. Help with a color please! Thank you.

  16. Hi, we are putting in Appalachian pine coretec flooring in our kitchen and was thnking of doing gauntlet gray on cabinets, what wall color would you do to compliment the floors and cabinets?

  17. Your article is extremely helpful as I have no eye for color! Last year we painted most of our interior spaces in Repose Gray and like the color. We are updating a guest bedroom which formerly had wallpaper and a stained chair rail. All the molding in the 1980’s house is stained wood. We have decided to leave the chair rail as it adds some character, and I ‘d like to use that as an opportunity to paint two colors in the room. Planning on Repose Gray for the top and want to select a darker gray for the bottom. Finally, I have already selected bedding which contains lots of blue/off-white, and I plan to find an accent rug with dark blues in it.
What would you recommend for the darker gray paint color?

    1. Hey Debbie!
      I’m Glad my post helped!
Whenever I use Repose and want a darker gray to complement it, I’ll use a shade from the same paint strip. I do that because I know the grays will have the same tones in them. Now i’m not sure how dark you are looking to go but Dorian Gray is 2 shades darker than Repose Gray. Then there are Dovetail, and Gauntlet (gauntlet being the darkest). All 3 shades coordinate perfectly with Repose.

  18. It’s me again……….after consideration, a dark blue rug may conflict with the darker gray shade on the lower half of the wall. I do want to play up the blues in the quilt, however. I think the rug will be lighter shades of blue (faded denim?) and gray.. FYI in case that alters your response.

    1. Hey again!!
So I have DOrian Gray painted in my master bedroom and my night stands are a faded blue denim color. My rug is a mix of grays, off whites and a tiny bit of yellow as well faded blue denim too. I love have the blues pop against the gray.

I hope this helps with your decision! I’d love to know what you decide.

  19. Hi! Your advice on selecting a darker gray to complement Repose Gray was very helpful. Thank You! I chose the Dorian Gray (two shades darker on the same paint strip) to use on the lower half of the walls in the bedroom below the chair rail. It looks fantastic….not too dark but a nice contrast. It really adds depth. With blue accents I have in the room now it really pops. I am very pleased with the outcome. I appreciate your help as I am definitely “color-challenged”!

  20. Hi- We are painting our kitchen cabinets (currently cherrywood) and kitchen walls. We have silestone as the counters speckled with creams/tans/browns/greys and were hoping to do grey cabinets. The person at Sherwin Williams recommended mindful grey since we probably need a Greish color to work with the counters. I’m wondering if we should do agreeable grey instead ? Our floor is a dark color that has dark greys/blues/and tans. Also I need help picking the wall color . I want something that feels open/airy/light but that has a little color as well- light enough to have contrast with the grey cabinets but coordinate well with them. I didn’t know if you had any SW recommdations they have worked well in the past with Greish. I feel it’s tricky bc of the neutral tones of the counters!

  21. Hi Cate!
Love your post and thank you for sharing your insight! Would you be willing to provide an idea for our space? We have a fairly open concept living/dining/kitchen area, split by a tall 1/2 wall all held by cathedral ceilings. The space has oak trim combined with a medium shade of cherry cabinetry in the kitchen. The best part is a south facing wall of floor to ceiling windows that let tons of unobstructed light in. We love gray and greigish colors and are unafraid of dark color. Would you have a suggestion or two?

  22. Our kitchen, great room and dining room are all open area. The great room has 16’ ceiling. We are having our cabinets painted in SW Dorian Gray. Do you think SW Worldly Gray would work on the walls ? All trim and shutters are white. Flooring will be tile that looks like wood.

    1. Hello Terri!
I do think Worldly Gray would work. Repose Gray is another color that looks great with Dorian Gray. Compared to Worldly Gray, Repose Gray is slightly cooler. It’s still a warmer gray but its cooler than Worldly.

  23. Hi! I really appreciated this post! I am looking to paint a Greige or warm grey throughout our semi-open living, dining and kitchen area. All of the trim is painted SW Dover White. The cabinets and fireplace mantel are warm medium brown stain. Any recommendations for a Greige that will go with the Dover White and not make it yellow or dingy? I have been considering SW Agreeable Grey and SW Worldly Grey but am open to more suggestions.

  24. Hello! We just painted our kitchen/dining room/foyer Dorian Gray and could not be happier. We are looking for a lighter color w/ a warm feel to paint the living room that has cathederal ceilings and flows into the upstairs loft and hallways. What color would you recommend that would pair well w/ Dorian Gray?

  25. very helpful and generous post. Thank you! We are selecting exterior colors for our one level, craftsman-ish home. We have decided to paint the exterior body Gauntlet Gray and are toying with a monocromatic scheme for the trim and accents, instead of using white. We were considering Dovetail for the trim and Dorian Gray for the accent. After painting a small section on the house with those three colors, Dovetail seems too brown/taupe-ish right next to Gauntlet Gray. Dorian Gray seems a better contrast for the trim. Possibly Dovetail for accent and garage door? Or is there another color that comes to mind for us to consider for the accent? We thought we might have the roof line trim in Urbane Bronze and the gutters that line the roof. Thank you for your eye and help. You’ve used all of these colors!

  26. Hi Cate,
Thank you for all of your reviews they are fantastic !
I am trying to pick out a warm griege for my dark kitchen , small bubble skylights that face north / west and there is a large bay window about 20 feet away which faces north/east . My walls are simply white and floor is an old parquet floor with pine and the detail has a dark brown/colonial color. I want to balance/mellow down the orangey wood tone from my restored floors . I am looking for a warm Greige for my cabinets possibly with a green undertone?. Was looking at anew grey and analytical Grey , soo many options ! Any suggestions of which samples to order ? Thank you !

    1. Hi Grace!
Thank you for your kind words.
You are right, there are soo many options! Anew Gray and Analytical Gray are both great options.
You can also check out Useful Gray (lighter option) or Mindful Gray.
I hope this helps a bit!

  27. Thank you for your post! We are currently repainting our house. We have chosen agreeable gray for the walls, and alabaster white for the cabinets. I plan on whitewashing our brick fireplace. What color would you recommend painting our mantle? A gray darker than our agreeable gray walls? Or a dark espresso color?

  28. Hi. I’m hoping you can help; we are doing our open concept kitchen/great room in a retro vibe with butter yellow appliances and island and a pop of color in a seating alcove in teal. I’d like to use gray on the main walls as the color that brings it all together. What are your thoughts on Grayish or Passive? Do you think either of these goes well with both Tame Teal and Pineapple Cream since they will all live together? Thanks for your help!

  29. Hi Cate,
We are wanting to paint the kitchen cabinets and walls in our east/west facing raised ranch. Our living room faces East and our kitchen faces West. We are wanting to paint the kitchen cabinets Dorian Gray. We are doing white subway tile back splash and raincloud corian countertops (a grayish marble pattern.) The wall colors we are considering are: Repose Gray, Agreeable Gray and maybe On the Rocks. Repose gray pairs well with Dorian Gray, but the lighting is poor in the hallway on the main level. Agreeable Gray looks awesome on the wall, but seems to look too beige when paired with the subway tile and raincloud corian coubtertop. We want something that pairs with the Dorian Gray cabinets and all the walls while being a bit brighter than Repose Gray. Any suggestions?

  30. Some Of these Grays look great with bright white trim. Which gray would you recommend for an off-white/almost cream colored trim? It’d be in a main floor, open floorplan; kitchen to Livingroom. Thank you

  31. Hi this was a really great post! I consider myself “color challenged” and we are doing a top to bottom renovation on our house and I need help! The interior of our house basically gets no to very little light unless we have the blinds open, which is rare. The house now is beige and brown tones and I really want to switch to a grey color palette. I was going to paint all rooms the same shade and was thinking of Gossamer Veil – thoughts on that color? I do not want any blue or green undertones and I did put a swatch on the wall, but I am still not sure (just need a professionals opinion. I am going bold and painting an accent was in the Master Bedroom Evening Hush, but the other 3 walls will be the same as the rest of the house. If you don’t think that will work do you have any other suggestions? I was thinking trim and kitchen cabinets would either be True White or Alabaster. Thank you!

    1. Hi Ellen,
Gossamer Veil is a beautiful warm gray. In rooms, without a ton of natural light, it can sometimes be a bit heavy. It can also show green undertones, so that is something to consider. I highly swatching the color on a piece of white poster board and moving it around your home to see how the color will look. When you swatched it on the wall how did it appear? And Evening Hush is a Behr color?

  32. I am trying to pick a grey paint for 2 large bedrooms. The carpet is a medium blue. Could you suggest a nice grey color that goes with blue tweed carpet.

  33. I haven’t seen you mention Zircon; does this have an undertone? I used unique gray in my daughter’s bedroom and that seems to have a purple undertone to it. I’m looking for a pale gray for the hallway (it doesn’t get a lot of natural light). Suggestions?

  34. I am thinking of painting edgecomb gray throughout my house as a nice neutral, with some warmth. Thinking of doing ceilings in White Dove. I have 2 accent walls on which I’d like to use a much darker gray – perhaps dovetail or gauntlet gray? I prefer a warmer feel – want to intro gray, but much of the house is beige-ish. Am I taking a reasonable path??

    1. Hi Roz,
It’s hard to give you accurate paint color suggestions without seeing the space. Being that you said much of the house is beige-ish, you definitely want to stick to warm greiges paint colors.

  35. Hi, We are repainting our family and kitchen. It is an open concept with a big island in between. I am looking for a gray color that would go with both rooms. I have oak cabinets and the base of the island is also oak, I was thinking of painting the base of the island a grey as well. I have looked at so many shades of gray that I cant decide which would be best and if I should paint the island a darker shade than the walls. Thanks for your help.

  36. Hi! I am considering SW Agreeable grey for my living and dining rooms. I am looking to have an accent wall in both rooms. I am looking at an airy blue gray for the accent. What is your opinion on pairing Agreeable Grey with SW Krypton? Or would there be another blue grey that would pair better. Or, if the blue gray would be my main color, what would be a good accent?
    Thank you.

  37. Just started painting my interior doors Dorian Gary. I was going to stuck with the white trim and baseboards, now I’m not so sure. Floors are wood looking grays/off whites. Kitchen has off whites cabinets, counter tops have the grays beiges and black. Can’t decide if I should go with the white trim and a color for the walls on the same color chart or look at a warmer beige/gray.

  38. Amazing article! We are in the process of remodeling our open concept living room which connects to the dining and kitchen. We will have the walls painted SW perfect greige (PG), the vinyl flooring is a medium tone grayish brown. We would like to paint our accent wall(fireplace/TV wall) a dark contrast color but are unsure as to what color to use? We would like to use the accent color for the kitchen cabinets as well to enhance a cohesive space. Also, we intend to paint the bookshelves(this is located on each side of the tv/fireplace) Perfect Greige and then the fireplace the accent color, will that look off or should we paint the book case sections the accent color and the fireplace/tv area Perfect Greige. Thanks in advance and your articles are so informative.

  39. I would love your advice. I’m torn between alpaca and versatile gray for kitchen walls. Medium oak cabinets/trim with gray stained hard wood floor. I get a ton of natural morning light since the room is east facing. My home has a lot of browns and I’m slowing trying to incorporate lighter farm house shades.

    1. Hi Teresa,
Alpaca is a gray with brown in it and Versatile Gray is more of a brown with gray in it. So it depends on it you are looking for a color that is more on the gray side.
      Both great colors though.

  40. suggestions for a warm gray for exterior house color? I have a brown roof and can’t change it. also, think I can get away with an iron ore (SW color) door? suggestions for trim color too.

    1. Hi,
Its hard to say what colors will look best without seeing the home. However, I can suggest a few colors you can take a look at. Sherwin Williams Intellectual Gray for the body and Neutral Ground for the trim. These 2 paint colors work well together. SW Keystone Gray and SW Summer White also are a good combo.

  41. Love this article, because so many of the grays can run together when looking at paint swatches!
We are getting ready to paint the outside of our house. The brick is a reddish/orange and right now the current trim is a deep yellow tan.
I had a sample of intellectual grey on a gutter, but after a few days it started looking too “green” to me. Any suggestions for a more neutral grey? Also, if I want to do the window trim (we have wood windows) and doors darker than the eaves, soffits etc. How many shades darker would you go on a paint strip? Two shades darker?
    Thank you.

  42. We are building a house and I’m in the process of trying to pick a paint color for the siding. Could you give me some suggestions if I send you a picture of the house?

  43. Hello and thanks for sharing your expertise! I’ve spent the weekend painting in our home build, to save some money:). It’s mostly Repose Gray with white trim. Sitting in the open concept you can see the laundry room, mud room area. It’s pretty dark dark back there. Only 1 tiny NE facing window. What do you think about a blue that could balance this area? Indigo blue, naval or ? Or do you think a medium green would be more balance against repose? I feel like it would be nice to see some color but not sure if the darker blues and greens would be a wrong path to consider. Thank you,

  44. Hi, I am looking for recommendations on a gray paint for our home’s exterior trim.
We are painting the house Sherwin Williams Alabaster, and I’m interested in suggestions for a cool gray (not too dark) for the trim (window frames, garage doors, door frames.) Our front door will be glossy black. Thanks in advance.

  45. Hi painted living room bm shale 861 but looks lavlavender on the walls in North facing room. Kitchen is bm barren plain. Looking for a greige color for living room that goes with kitchen. HAve beige carpet and dark brown couch with teal pillows. Thank you. Lynda

  46. Hi Cate,
Great post…I’d love your advice! I live in So Cal and have a mediterranean style stucco home with red tile roof (not bright red more aged/almost terracotta looking at this point) and also have some red brick on my walkway. I’m looking for a warm light gray color that would work. I recently had to paint the back/side wall (which you can see from the front of the house) and choose BM white dove, I was in a pinch 😬 It would be best if i didn’t have to change the color but the hubs said if we need to we can just paint the part of the wall that faces the street. My house faces directly north so I worry about the color going too cold. I also love the idea of a white house but don’t want to match the wall. I’m happy to provide a photo if that helps. Also, if you could suggest a trim color it would be greatly appreciated! FYI, I have Tricorn Black on my front door and love it.
I’m so stressed about this and I’ve been going through so many colors(mindful gray, revere pewter, repose gray, agreeable gray and more) but its so hard to know how the undertones will be in large scale. I could really use your advice. Thank you in advance!!

  47. Hello!
I was searching for grey colors and stumbled upon this site. Awesome information, thank you!

I am in the process of painting my entire 70’s house ( with the exception of bedrooms) the same color to update it.
All of the interior doors and trim are stained wood. ( 70-80s)

My kitchen is opened to the family room with a fireplace. I want to paint my kitchen cabinets and the wall with the Fireplace an accent color, to tie it together. The mantel is a 100 yr. old price of trestle from a barn. I’m also considering putting new brick/tile pieces over the fireplace because it’s an ugly color of brick ( almost like a yellowish brown)

Colors I was looking at –
    Repose grey with Dorian grey
    Mindful grey with dovetail

Repose is a little light for me, yet mindful may have too much of an undertone. I’m not afraid of color, just trying to stay neutral for selling purposes.

I’m not sure what to do but I am open to any suggestions and would so sincerely appreciate any.

  48. We have an open floor plan with it all painted Dorian Gray. We are going to do a very large accent grid wall. What color would you recommend painting it? I was thinking just keeping it Dorian Gray, painting it a bit darker with Dovetail, or going with a blue in Naval or Gale Force.

We are trying to figure out a gray for the exterior of our home that also had red brick. What would you suggest for a true grey (on the warmer side) that is medium to dark. We looked at Gauntlet Gray but it reallllly seems to be pulling brown/purple out. I would love any suggestions for a true gray since you obviously have a great eye for color! thanks!!

    1. Hi Christina,
Thank you so much for the kind words!
Gauntlet Gray can certainly pull purple at times. You may want to check out Benjamin Moore Chelsea Gray or Sherwin Williams Classic French Gray. I hope that helps!

  50. I have read about every article you have here on these grays and have tried ten different gray samples for my bedroom! It’s a small ranch bedroom with not a lot of light, warm brown wood floors and white trim. The thing is I went with Agreeable Gray for the rest of the house (thanks for the article!!!). I LOVE the color, but wanted a slightly different color for my room to separate it, looking for the same feel, but maybe a smidge darker, but still gray, not beige. I was considering Repose Gray, I liked the sample, but wondering if you have another suggestion. I’m totally paint color shy!

  51. Hi guys,
I just painted mu huge living area/dining area/foyer repose gray (love it). Now I have decided
to paint my brick fireplace in the living area. I’m thinking Dovetail or Dorian Gray – help!!!

  52. Hi! I too would appreciate the paint color of the blue door. Your link pops up during an image search, which is how I landed on ur blog.
www dot pinterest dot com dot au/pin/63120832259132373/

The google image search used the words “blue front door gray house” along with a pic from the above modified address.

    1. Hi Bethany,
That is so strange, it’s not one of my pictures so I have no clue how my site was linked to it. If I had to guess the colors I’d said it was Sherwin Williams Naval.

  53. Hi, I would like to paint the exterior of my house a gray color but unfortunately my windows and trim are an almond color. I would love to replace the windows but they are only a year old. Is there a gray color that can go with almond trim? Thank You

  54. Hi We are painting our kitchen cabinets. We have 15foot ceilings semi open area. We have white tile floors live in Florida and want to go grey.stainless Steele appliances.wood and glass dinette area. What color grey do you recommend? Thank you for your help.

  55. Hi
I’m painting my exterior shutters SW Dovetail on my house that is painted white. Can you tell me if Mindful Gray would work for my front door? Also, on my back door I wanted to paint it a color..maybe SW Habenero Chile…do u think these two colors will work?
    Many thanks!

  56. Hi cate
Love the blog! Could you recommend a grey that would sit with a grey wood flooring (which has blue undertones). I don’t want the room to be too cool so would Mindful Gray be too dull? Would you suggest Dorian Grey for more warmth?

  57. Hi! I’m so confused lol I redid my kitchen last year. I charcoal gray with sparkly countertop, gray backsplash with light gray grout and when we re-painted the Cabinets we used a gray color that was more on the beige side which I didn’t realize till it was all finished. I really want to change it to a more gray color but pale gray. What would be your suggestion? I’m liking Sw rock Candy and I also light lazy gray and monorail gray. I am going to go buy samples of those to test but which would you suggest would be best or any other suggestions?

    1. Hey Suzanne,
Lazy Gray and Rock Candy will most likely look blue at times because of the blue undertones. Monorail Silver is the most gray out of the 3. It does have blue in it but not like the other two. The are all fantastic colors, it just depends on if you don’t mind the blue undertones.

  58. I am attempting to choose a wall color for our new build in SC for an open living area with cathedral ceilings, and extending into an adjacent room and hallway, but a northern exposure that I wanted to be in the Greige family, but it has to be warm, inviting, and coordinate with punches of color in my upholstery (potentially teal, green, or maybe even red) amidst neutrals, and with kitchen cabinets. I am limited in my cabinetry colors, but elected Analytical Gray for the perimeter cabinetry, which is not immediately adjacent to any painted wall. The island will be Dovetail, which is just an accent so I wouldn’t think would play a large role in my ultimate color choice.Very dark hardwood floors. Analytical gray has a lot of yellow in it, but I don’t want beiges or khakis, as I want to avoid dinginess. Accessible Beige is too light. The only thing I could come up with was using Analytical Gray on the walls too. Too boring, and matchy-matchy? Any suggestions?

  59. HiCate,
Thanks for the post. My house has a lot of wood elements and I’m thinking of painting it in White Dove and another color (?), but I’m not sure. Can you please give me some advice of what colors goes with hazelnut wood? Thanks.

  60. Hey painters,
We bought a home and are looking to paint entire downstairs one neutral, light, gray. Any suggestion? Floors are a medium wood, trim is off-white, ceilings off-white. Good bit of natural light in most areas, but wanting a bright/light feel. Thanks in advance! Oh I really like Repose grey but I’m afraid it will be a little too dark with the dark floors and every wall! 🙂

  61. I am considering using Agreeable Gray throughout the interior of my house with the exception of Sea Grass in 2 bathrooms and using Comfort Gray in my dining room. I have one problem. My great room is exceptionally dark because its only light comes from two doors that are connected to a screen backporch. The only light in the room is from 4 lamps. I need a color to go with the Agreeable Gray in my great room that will have a higher light reflectivity. What do you suggest?

My master bedroom ajoins the great room with a hallway. I thought about using the same color in the hallway as in the greatroom, but then using AG in the bedroom. What do you think? I need the gray color to be warm because of my furniture.

My kitchen has white cabinets, white backsplach, and black granite counter top with oak floors. Should the kitchen be painted in AG?

  62. Thank you so much for the greatly detailed explanation of these colors. We just recently purchased a log cabin and I’m going crazy over figuring out paint colors to pair up with the coloring of the pine floors and ceiling. We plan to paint some of the pine, but not all of it. I typically lean more towards a neutral wall color which allows me to change my accent color any time I like with rugs and pillows. This usually is done while having a dark flooring, the pine is throwing off my game. I am planning to use your advise and choose 3 of these warmer grey colors to try, but wondered which 3 you felt would best pair with pine? Again, thank you for your explanations, they are the best I’ve read so far.

  63. Hi Cate. Our den needs an overhaul and we’re trying to go from a very gold/yellow overly warm look to grays. Think almost 70s. A sofa and chair are quite the brown/copper color. We have a big walnut rich brown entertainment center on the south wall. Our north wall is the longest, flanked by two windows, with sofa in between. The east wall is the fireplace wall, white mantle, also flanked by two windows. Beige carpet. All trim is pure white. We are open to two colors on walls and we’re actually thinking SW special gray on the north and west wall, south and east walls with a light gray, like SW Accessible beige. Special gray is definitely dark and with purple undertones. We also thought Dovetail on the sofa/north wall but the taupe color seems to clash with the sofa. Overall wanted to cool off the room given the very warm furniture and accessories. The room flows to a kitchen with autumn/copper stained maple cabinets. Any suggestions? We’re just too orange/yellow/copper right now.

  64. Hi Cate, I need a confirmation and/or advise that I’ve picked correct colors for my exterior. I selected Felted wool for the siding and intellectual gray for the dormer since the roof is more brown and the shutters and gutters are brown and with some stone we have also has some browns. Did I select the right colors? I’m not seeing Felted wool as a very popular color and hope it’s not going to be too dark. Hope you can advise or confirm! Thank you!

  65. We have a tan color carpet throughout the house. I’m plain and simple. I want to do a gray throughout the house! In the kitchen we have a golden oak cabinets and table and a little darker floor/ stainless steel refrigerator. I thought about agreeable gray on the top and navy blue under the chair rail in a he kitchen! What do you think about those colors with the tan carpet and golden oak cabinets?

    1. Hi Kelli,
I think Agreeable Gray and Navy look very nice together. But It’s hard to say if it will work in your space without me seeing it. Your best bet is to get samples of the colors and test them in your home first.

  66. We are looking to paint our interior garage. Trying to decide between agreeable gray and anew gray. What are your thoughts? Also, should we paint the ceilings the same color?

    1. Hi Karen,
Bothe Agreeable Gray and Anew Gray are fabulous colors. I personally like Agreeable Gray a little better. and you can definitely paint the ceilings the same color. Or for a little differentiation, You can use the same color at 25%
