These 20 cleaning hacks will have you wishing you knew about them sooner. Save precious time by implementing these easy hacks into your cleaning routine.

With Spring on the horizon, the cleaning itch is coming upon us. If you are a weirdo who doesn’t mind cleaning, such as myself, then this is an exciting time for us.

That being said since I have that magical cleaning gene, I have picked up a few awesome time-saving and fast cleaning hacks over the years.

20 CLEANING HACKS EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW

1. CREAM OF TARTAR TO CLEAN SCRATCHED DISHES

cream of tartar cleaning hack

Are your everyday plates scratched? No worries, you can easily use cream of tartar to buff those scratches out.

Sprinkle the cream of tartar generously on the plate, add a few drops of water, and gently buff with a wet dishrag.

Let it sit for a minute then scrub and wash the plate with soap and water.

2. KEEP ESSENTIAL OIL SOAKED COTTON BALLS IN YOUR GARBAGE CAN

No one wants stinky garbage am I right? However, it’s garbage and it’s bound to be stinky. Easily cut that stink down by using cotton balls soaked in essential oils.

This fast cleaning hack is a great way to freshen up a usually unfresh space.  Just add the oil-soaked cotton balls to the bottom of your garbage can before you add your liner and you’ll be stink-free.

Cleaning Hacks Bonus

Don’t have any essential oil on hand? Sprinkle some baking soda in the bottom of your garbage can. The baking soda will absorb the odors from the garbage.

3. LEMON AND SALT TO CLEAN AND DISINFECT A CUTTING BOARD

salt and lemon

Simply sprinkle the entire cutting board with a hefty layer of salt, cut your lemon in half and use the lemon to scrub the salt. Once the cutting board has been scrubbed, take your sponge and wipe the cutting board clean. Not only does this cleaning hack give you a clean and disinfected cutting board but, it also makes it smell lemony fresh.

4. MAKE YOUR OWN CLEANING SOLUTION

This is one of the best cleaning hacks I use religiously. Not only is it an awesome money saver but also, it’s a natural alternative to some other harsh chemical cleaners. I’ll use this DIY cleaner on my shower walls, bathtub, and sinks.

How I make My DIY Cleaning Solution: I’ll take a spray bottle and add about a cup of vinegar. Next, I’ll add warm water, filling up the rest of the bottle. Once the bottle is full I’ll add about 4 to 5 drops of Dawn dishwashing liquid. Finally, to add a pleasant scent, I’ll add a few drops of lavender essential oil.

5. USE CHALK TO REMOVE GREASE OR OIL STAINS

We’ve all been there. You are innocently enjoying your BIG salad when a piece of lettuce escapes your mouth and flops onto your shirt. You say to your shirt, “well, we had a good run”. There’s still hope!  Blot off any excess oil from your shirt then, grab that white chalk and cover the oil stain. Let the chalk work its magic for a few minutes then immediately wash.

Cleaning Hacks Bonus

This chalk cleaning hack works on dreaded lipstick stains too!

6. PUT A FEW DROPS OF ESSENTIAL OILS IN YOUR TOILET PAPER ROLL

toilet paper roll

This is not only one of the most ingenious cleaning hacks but also a room freshening hack. Adding a few drops of your favorite scented essential oil to the toilet paper roll will freshen your bathroom with every spin.

7. EASILY CLEAN YOUR BLENDER

Being the smoothie expert I am, I use my Ninja blender all the time. From kale and spinach to berries and bananas, the blender can get messy. And nothing is worse than trying to clean a blender. This the perfect cleaning hack for the lazy that easily solves your messy blender problems.

Simply add a cup or so of warm water and a drop of dish soap and blend, blend away. Just like that, all the hard work is done for you. Rinse the blender really well and let it dry.

8. BAKING SODA CLEANING HACK TO CLEAN UP PET ACCIDENTS

Anyone with a fur baby knows accidents happen. You certainly want to be prepared when these accidents do happen.

Now, this is more of a second step hack to the first initial clean up.

For example, if one of my pups threw up on the carpet, I’ll clean up everything and blot right away. I use Natures Miracle to do the first clean up.

Next, I’ll sprinkle a thick layer of baking soda over the accident spot additionally, adding a bit of water.

I then take an old toothbrush and scrub the spot. As you scrub the baking soda will become dirty (gross). Once the scrubbing is complete, clean up the area and again, cover the spot with baking soda.

Finally, let that baking soda sit, at least overnight so it has a chance to really absorb any smell that was left.

9. USE A PAINT BRUSH TO DUST YOUR CAR

This paint brush trick is one of the most recent cleaning car hacks I have come across, and it does not disappoint!

All you need is a (clean) paint brush. Basically, you use the paint brush to brush away dust in the small crevices of your car that are hard to reach. This is an excellent way to keep your car looking tidy in between full car wash and vacuum cleanings.

10. SPEED UP DRYER TIME

There are times when you are doing laundry and you need to get your favorite shirt dried sooner than later.  An easy way to speed up the drying process is by adding a dry towel to the dryer along with your wet clothes.

I’ve used this laundry cleaning hack multiple times and it really does work. I like to use this hack when I’m drying towels because we all know towels take forever to dry!

11. WHEN WASHING TOWELS, ADD VINEGAR AND BAKING SODA

This is another cleaning hack with baking soda I use often. My towels were starting to feel a bit stiff and unfluffy. Rather than buying all new towels, I opted to try this cleaning hack to bring the fluff back to my towels.

What you do is, take a cup of vinegar and add it to your washing machine where you normally add the laundry detergent then add your towels. Set the machine to hot and go through the cycle as your normally would without adding any detergent or fabric softener.

When the cycle is complete, repeat the first step but this time, add a cup of baking soda. Remember, don’t add detergent or fabric softener. Once the cycle runs through, take the towels out and place them in your dryer on high heat.

The baking soda and vinegar remove the buildup of residue on your towel, which brings them back to life. Depending on the level of fluffiness, you may have to repeat the process. I’ll usually do this to my towels once a month. This is definitely one easy cleaning hack you want to try.

12. USE VINEGAR, BAKING SODA AND, BOILING WATER TO HELP UNCLOG A DRAIN

Clogged drains are a real pain in the neck. Before you reach for the Draino or the phone to call a plumber, try this simple cleaning hack to get the job done.

First things first, boil water. I don’t use an exact amount I’ll usually just fill up my tea kettle.  Next, get a cup of baking soda and pour it down the drain.  After you pour the baking soda, take a cup of vinegar and a cup of hot water and pour it over the baking soda. Plug the drain and let it sit for at least 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, flush the drain with boiling water.

This is yet another baking soda cleaning hack I have used before and it worked for me. I did need to repeat the process 3 times, but it unclogged whatever was causing the problem in the drain.

13. SOAK YOUR SHOWERHEAD IN VINEGAR

You know when you turn on the shower and there is that one spray hole on your showerhead that shoots off against the wall?

Well this is a great bathroom cleaning hack to fix that wonky spray hole for you.

Supplies Needed:

  • white vinegar
  • plastic ziplock bag
  • rubber band

Place the bag around the showerhead, fill the bag up with the vinegar so all the spray holes are submerged.

Tightly wrap the rubber band around the neck of the showerhead to ensure the plastic bag stays in place.

Allow the fixture to soak overnight.

Remove the bag and run hot water for a few minutes to remove any loosened minerals and vinegar. Next, grab an old toothbrush and scrub the showerhead to get any mineral build-up that was missed.

Flush it out with cold water and you will have a good as new shower head.

14. USE A RUBBER GLOVE TO CLEAN UP PET HAIR

Most pets shed, it’s inevitable.  Pet hair on your couch can become a pain in the neck to clean. You can easily remove pet hair with a simple pair of rubber gloves

Rub the gloves over the couch and the pet hair with cling to them. To remove the hair, submerge the gloves in water. Simple as that.

15. PAINLESSLY REMOCE SCRATCHES FROM YOUR WHITE FARMHOUSE SINK

Farmhouse sinks are absolutely stunning. They add such a level of charm to your kitchen. The only downfall to a farmhouse sink is how they easily scuff.

barkeepers friend

I’m going to say this is more of a hidden gem then one of the cleaning hacks. Barkeeper’s Friend . This is what keeps my farmhouse sink looking fresh all the time.

When washing larger pots and pans, the sink tends to get a few scuffs and scratches here and there. A quick remedy for those pesky scuffs to sprinkle some Barkeeper’s Friend in the sink, let it sit for a minute then, scrub.

I also found that Barkeeper’s Friend works beautifully on the bathroom tub, toilet and even copper pots!

16. CLEAN THE INSIDE COMPONENTS OF YOUR REFRIGERATOR IN THE DISHWASHER.

Who has the time to hand wash every little shelf and component in your refrigerator? I know I don’t, plus I’m lazy and I don’t want to be bothered.

This cleaning hack is the perfect solution for lazy people like me.

All you need to do is load up your dishwasher with the removable components of your fridge. Of course, you’ll have to make sure the components actually fit in your dishwasher first. But, a lot of the smaller parts do, and depending on the type of dishwasher you own, you may even be able to get the shelves in there as well.

Run through a cycle and you are done.

17. USE AN OLD PILLOWCASE TO CLEAN A CEILING FAN

Have you ever tried to dust a ceiling fan? The dust just about goes everywhere except the duster. There’s a simple cleaning hack to solve that problem.

Take an old pillowcase and spray it with the homemade cleaning solution I mentioned earlier, or any multi-purpose cleaning solution.

Next, place the pillowcase around one fan blade. With light pressure, slowly pull the pillowcase off, collecting the dust as you go.

Essentially, the pillowcase removes all the dust and dirt while keeping it contained.

18. FRESHEN UP YOUR MATTRESS WITH BAKING SODA

Bedsheets, pillowcases, and blankets are cleaned often. That being said, shouldn’t you do the same for your mattress?

This mattress cleaning hack using baking soda will have you wondering why you waited so long to try it. All you need is some baking soda, essential oil, a strainer/sifter, and a vacuum.

To start, take your box of baking soda and add a few drops of essential oil to it. Close the box up and shake it to evenly distribute the oil.

Next, grab your sifter and sift the baking soda all over the mattress. Let the baking soda sit for at least an hour or 2.

Once the time is up, grab the vacuum and remove the baking soda from the mattress.

Not only does this one of the cleaning hacks freshen your mattress, but it also removes dirt and dust mites, as well as helping wick away moisture.

19. MAYONNAISE TO CLEAN WATER STAINS ON WOOD FURNITURE

If you are unaware, I enjoy fixing up old furniture. Whether it’s painting or restoring the wood finish, I love it all. That being said, I have tried my share of different wood furniture polishes and cleaners. And not one of them has performed as well as this unusual cleaning hack.

Plain and simple, use mayonnaise to buff out water stains on your wood furniture. It sounds unusually crazy and even a little gross but, boy does it work!

I’ve even used a little mayo to polish a full piece of wood furniture. I’m happy to report she is still shining to this day.

This is definitely one of my favorite cleaning hacks I use.

20. DUST YOUR BASEBOARDS WITH DRYER SHEETS

Any cleaning hack with minimal effort is my thing and this one plays right into that!

Baseboards are annoying to clean and are often overlooked because so. However, using a dryer sheet to do the work for you solves this dirty baseboard situation.

Why a dryer sheet you ask? Well, a dryer sheet works well attracting dust since it banishes static.

Gently wipe the sheets along the baseboards and within a few minutes, your baseboards will be clean and dust-free. This also keeps your baseboards clean throughout the week for ongoing dust-fighting power.

Great tips Cate! I've done a few of these myself, like the homemade cleaner, and it works great! I'll have to try the essential oils in the trash can though! And I've been meaning to wash my bath towels, I just haven't made the effort too. Maybe some Spring Cleaning?!
